About the Company

Shadow Lawn Press, founded in 1983, is an interactive multimedia publisher, a literary and theatrical rights agency, and an editorial development company in trade, business, professional, reference, and mass market books.

The Shadow Lawn Press list includes best-selling current events and true-crime titles, celebrity autobiographies, celebrity and television retrospective cookbooks, crafts and how-to books, and computer technology titles.

Some of our most successful titles are CHEAPER & BETTER, THE MCGRAW-HILL PERSONAL COMPUTER PROGRAMMING ENCYCLOPEDIA, SERIAL KILLERS: A GROWING MENACE, and THE BRADY BUNCH COOKBOOK. Included in its current and forthcoming list are RIVERMAN, by Seattle detective Robert Keppel, GREEN ICE by San Diego reporter J.S. Myer, and THE STAR TREK COOKBOOK by Majel Barrett Roddenberry. On its theatrical slate for 1996 are FATAL PRESCRIPTION, a miniseries at Longbow Productions, and GREEN ICE, a two-hour pilot for a televison series at Avnet/Kerner.

Shadow Lawn Press interactive projects include LEONARDO, THE INVENTOR, THOMAS EDISON AND THE AGE OF INVENTION, an interactive brochure for Hewlett-Packard, and an interactive CD and Internet website for BRINKE AND THE ETERNITY WARRIORS comics. Projected for 1996 are websites and home banking CD-ROMs for the Bank Marketing Association, the Russian-American Business Congress, and an interactive book/website for THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE KGB.

About the Founders

At Columbia University's School of the Arts/School of Law, Birnes majored in entertainment law and theatrical production while he managed the Horace Mann Theater and theatrical workshop complex at Columbia University's Teacher's College. In Los Angeles, Birnes produced the showcase theatrical presentation for HBO and Showtime of "Twice Blessed" by Art Metrano and Cynthia Lee under the sponsorship of Barry Levinson and Mark Johnson in cooperation with Creative Artists, and also produced the showcase presentation of "Dr. Thrill" by John Kostner.

Birnes, a Ph.D. in Linguistics, has been a Ford Foundation Scholar, National Endowment for the Humanities Post Doctoral Fellow, a grants award judge for the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Lily Foundation Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.

Nancy Birnes is a 1979 summa cum laude graduate of Princeton University, was the editorial director of IDEA SOURCE GUIDE from 1972 through 1974 and published her first novel, CLEANING HOUSE, with Farrar, Straus, and Giroux in 1980. CLEANING HOUSE has been translated into six foreign languages and published in nine countries. Her second novel GIMME A KISS will be published by Grove/Atlantic Monthly Press.

As the author of CHEAPER & BETTER, Nancy Hayfield has appeared on such programs as the CBS "Morning Show;" "Live with Regis and Kathy Lee;" "People are Talking" in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston; "AM Los Angeles;" "AM Northwest" in Portland, and "Kelly & Company" in New York.

She was an adjunct member of the English Department faculty at Trenton State College in New Jersey in 1980-81, developed a personal computer S.A.T. Preparation software package for Prentice Hall in 1985 on both the Apple II and IBM PC that was rated the best in its market by the National Education Association, and also in 1985 developed QWERTY'S ALPHABET ADVENTURE, a pre-schooler's book/software package for Apple, Atari, Commodore, Radio Shack, and Texas Instruments computers that was published by Hayden Books. As a project director for International Schools Services in Princeton, New Jersey, Nancy Hayfield Birnes managed the installation of a microputer-based information management and retrieval system for International Schools Services, published the company's DIRECTORY OF OVERSEAS SCHOOLS in 1982, edited and published its monthly Internation Schools newspaper in 1981-82, and as manager of the proposal team, obtained a $47 million grant from Saudi Arabia for the installation of an English language school in the industrial city of Yanbu in 1981.
